Analyzing Existing Data
To truly understand your ICP's search patterns, you need to dive deep into the data you already have. This data can provide valuable insights into the keywords and content that are already resonating with your audience, helping you make informed decisions about your search strategy.
Step 1: Leverage Google Analytics
Google Analytics is a powerful tool that can uncover a wealth of information about your website traffic and user behavior. Here's how to use it to inform your search strategy:
- Identify which keywords and phrases are driving traffic to your site by navigating to the Acquisition > Search Console > Queries report.
- Analyze the Behavior > Site Content > Landing Pages report to see which pages and content are resonating with your audience, as indicated by metrics like bounce rate, average session duration, and conversions.
- Look for patterns and trends in your data that can inform your search strategy. For example, if you notice that visitors who land on a particular page tend to have a high conversion rate, you may want to focus on creating more content around that topic or optimizing for related keywords.
Pro Tip: Don't just look at the overall traffic numbers – dig deeper into the quality of that traffic. High-converting, engaged visitors are more valuable than a high volume of bounced sessions.
Step 2: Analyze Conversion Data
While traffic data is important, it's the conversion data that truly shines a light on what's working (and what's not) with your current search strategy. Here's how to analyze it:
- Navigate to the Conversions > Goals > Reverse Goal Path report in Google Analytics to see the pages and content that are most effective at driving conversions.
- Identify the keywords and phrases associated with those high-converting pages and content pieces by cross-referencing with the Acquisition > Search Console > Queries report.
- Look for patterns in the user behavior and engagement metrics for these high-converting pages and content pieces. What's making them so successful? Can you replicate that success with other content and keywords?
Important Note: If you haven't set up conversion tracking in Google Analytics, do that first! Without conversion data, you're flying blind when it comes to understanding what's truly resonating with your audience.
By analyzing your existing data, you can identify patterns and trends that will inform your search strategy. You'll gain valuable insights into the keywords, content, and user behaviors that are already driving traffic and conversions, allowing you to double down on what's working and eliminate what's not.
Remember, data is king in the world of search marketing. The more you can learn from the data you already have, the better equipped you'll be to create a search strategy that truly resonates with your ICP.
